For some people it is painting, for others, it may be singing, drawing, hockey or soccer. Having a passion for something is to be dedicated to the cause. People will say that they have a passion for something but a real one brings incredible feelings. A feeling of happiness, excitement and sometimes even pride. Growing up, we wonder about what we like and what we want to do with our lives. As a high school student, the university is approaching, and decisions need to be made. What do I want to do for the rest of my life? I want to do something that fascinates me and will make me want to get up every morning. The decisions made throughout my life now, will guide me towards my future.
Growing up, finding myself a passion was not really a priority. The arts interested me, but not much that I could recognize it as a passion. When I transitioned to high school, I realized how vast the arts fields was, there are performing arts, musical arts, visual arts and many others. Before high school, the performing arts were not offered to me but since then, I got hooked by the theater. One defines a passion as being “a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept.’’ Apart from the theater, another performing art that I adore is improvisation. A number of people have told me that I have talent in this area and that I should not stop, but it is that the stress of failing that is stronger. I stress myself to perform and to do well. I discovered improv at the elementary school, and I found the concept quite interesting, having the opportunity to create its own story in addition to playing it. While reading Angelina's dissertation, I told myself that my passion may be coming to an end, that I probably would not have the choice but to let go and do something else. At a very young age, I was initiated to the pleasure of traveling. When I was young, my parents used to go on trips around the world and would bring me back souvenirs. I began to want to travel like them, to explore the world on my own. The first traveling experience I have had was when we went to Walt Disney World, it was my first time out of the country, exploring and discovering another part of the world. I wanted to see more, and at the age of thirteen, my parents brought me to Europe for the first time, we went to Italy. I saw with my own eyes what I had seen before in movies or on television. Our trip was guided so I learned about the history of that country. And that is when my passion for history began. We sometimes forget to go out and see the world around us. To learn more about our history is to get to know each other better. The passions I mentioned came to me throughout the years, and you never know, maybe new passions are waiting for me in the future. The time has come for me to choose my university program. I have to choose between stability or to follow my passion and at the same time my dreams. Should I continue and persevere or accept the fact that my passion is coming to an end? There is a quote that I found while doing some research, and I thought it was appropriate for the subject. Love the life you live. Live the life you love. - Bob Marley

“I am your father,” it may seem familiar, these words have marked generations. Even people who have never seen the movie are able to recognize them, this quote proves that motion-pictures have an effect on our culture. The film industry has become one of the most profitable industries of our century. The art of motion-picture was established two centuries ago and does not stop innovating from year to year, with new technologies and emerging actors and directors. Each year, thousands of movies are released, and they have something for everyone. The question we rarely ask ourselves is why we enjoy so much watching movies? The world is filled with artists working towards the same goal, entertaining us.
A motion-picture employs thousands of people, each working on a different aspect of the production. The film industry, over the years, has added new aspects to the job due to technological innovation but the goal has not changed, produce a movie to entertain the audience. A whole industry that revolves around one simple thing, a motion-picture, which, according to the dictionary, is considered “a sequence of consecutive pictures of objects photographed in motion by a specially designed camera and thrown on a screen by a projector in such rapid succession as to give the illusion of natural movement.’’ Each year, actors, directors, makeup artists, writers and many other passionate people, make their way to Hollywood to try their luck in the business. Each and every one of them works hard, however, show business is filled with miserable artists who only have the idea of making money. “We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies,’’ said Walt Disney, the man who believed in dreams. The passion he had, touched millions of children across the planet and throughout history. The world he invented will remain forever in our hearts. By what I have seen and heard in my life so far, I have learned that to work in an industry like this, you have to be willing to make sacrifices and be determined because it will not be easy, you must have the passion to do a simple thing, to tell a story. The art of cinematography is recognized across the globe by the release of various motion-pictures, touching a variety of subjects. The cinematographic repertoire is categorized into genres, each having their own characteristics and formula. For example, the horror genre focuses on fear, the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind. Every person has their tastes and this industry have something for everyone. Our society tends to believe everything the media or politicians are saying. By releasing movies talking about different social issues, the film industry can have the same effects on society. As Christopher Nolan is saying, “I think audiences get too comfortable and familiar in today’s movies. They believe everything they’re hearing and seeing. I like to shake that up.’’ On some occasions, a movie can be the source of a controversy as they may have touched a social issue and thereby, contradict and shock the society, although, in the end, we still watch them as they entertain us. What would be our Friday nights without a good movie and popcorn? The idea of a world without movies is horrible, our entertainment experiences usually come from the art of filmmaking. Roman Polanski once said, “Cinema should make you forget you are sitting in a theater.’’ The film industry makes us happy because it gives us the opportunity to let go and free our imagination. The movies let us put ourselves in the place of the characters and imagine what our life would have looked like if we would have dared to do what we always wanted to do. On a bad day, I know I will always be able to count on a movie to cheer me up. What does food, gas, and electricity have in common? Money. A person needs it to buy food, get gas, and pay his monthly bills. A human being devotes his life to working and waiting for paychecks, and on their deathbed, they question their whole life, “Have I been happy?” This essay is based on the question: can money buy happiness? Our society thinks that by collecting money, we will be able to be happier. This statement insinuates that we should spend money to buy cars of the year, a new purse or a full new wardrobe, but are these things really making us happy? “Money cannot fill the new house with a lovely family, a concert with no friends aside is not so enjoyable and traveling alone will not bring you happy memories.’’ You are not rich until you have something money cannot buy.
Our education, health, and defense system depend on money to ensure their operations. Money has taken more value than humanity, sharing and caring is rare these days. The society surrounding us is controlled by money. The phenomenon of overconsumption is becoming more prevalent as people only think of buying goods for themselves than help those in need. People care more about their phones than the people around them. Money makes us blind. Company employees are only numbers in the eyes of CEOs. Cities are filled with wolves who only want to fill their pockets with bacon. The research demonstrates that poor people seem to be happier than rich people as they have found the true meaning of happiness. People who earn more money tend to be happier with themselves, and people who earn less tend to be happier depending on the relationship they have with others. As mentioned in the essay, the Maslow pyramid proves that money is not in the equation for happiness. One, we need to fulfill our physiological needs such as eating, sleeping and obtaining safety. The first needs being fulfilled, we need our psychological needs, including self-esteem and love, in order to reach self-actualization. Money certainly has a little bit of positive impact on relationships, some people like to spend their money buying time with family and friends, some like giving money and time to organizations than help those in need. Money can be used to help others although it cannot buy friends, family or love. Money changes our perception of the world. An extracurricular activity at school allowed me to go on a humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic to help an orphanage. The week spent there has transformed the way I see the world. There, they had almost nothing, there were children who had never known their parents or brothers and sisters, who had lived on the street all their lives and they were still happy. Food and a roof were provided to them and a family was formed with all the orphans. Every day, they are eager to go to school and get an education. Give a child a ball and you make his day. Here, in Canada, a child is not happy that his parents did not get him a new phone. We notice that we are all spoiled and do not realize the chance we have to go to school, to have a house, a mother and a father. Our capitalist society makes us forget to be grateful for everything we have. Money dominates our society and everything around it, however, it should not control the person we are. A heartless millionaire would be lonely and empty-minded if one day he would lose all his money. Money is not the only thing in the world, we must stop thinking that it is the answer to everything. If money is the only motivation to get up in the morning and go to work, you are not happy. This quote of Victor Hugo concludes our reflection perfectly: “Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy, so they know the value of things, not the price.” Technological advances and excavations have allowed us to find traces of civilizations more than thousands of years and ever since, many things have happened that changed the future of our society. The 1940s started with the release of a movie called The Dictator, which had been written, directed and produced by the one and only, Charlie Chaplin. The end of the movie includes a speech, told by the man itself, which describes the meaning of what humanity should be. Even if the speech was written in the 1930s, it can still be transposed into today’s society, the problems and social issues have changed little since then. “We think too much and feel too little! More than machinery, we need humanity!’’Our society would rather think too much and put their feelings aside than living to the fullest.
The aspects of a personality can be represented by two fields: science versus arts. The fields listed above are present in our everyday life since our brain is separated into two hemispheres. The left side deals with science and mathematics, and the right side deals with the arts and imagination. “We think too much and feel too little!’’The left side takes advantage of the right side. Machines have transformed society and made us lazy. Like a machine, we find the easiest way to solve a problem. The machines have an instruction manual and follow precise rules. Our society is controlled by numbers, the idea of living without the aspect of time is unimaginable. The employees are organized in cubicles, work from eight to four, five days a week. Like numbers, money has become a crucial part of our society as it controls everything; people live and work for it, just to buy happiness. Freedom has become a luxury. The media and politicians control the population like puppets. The imagination has been suppressed by norms, rules, and laws. We prefer mass production compared to originality. The ability to create without restriction, without censorship is the best feeling that a human being can experience because it is freeing him from his thoughts. Our emotions are put aside although we should cherish them. Our history has been the victim of horrible moments that has put the humanity of our world in doubt, yet humanity is gaining the upper hand, little by little. Over the past centuries, social issues have emerged and are still present in today’s society. The medieval time was filled with religion-related beliefs that had been implanted in society and anyone who wanted to contradict them were killed. This phenomenon is not new in parts of the world where there is a government-controlled society. People trying to seek the truth and help humanity are perceived as crazy and mentally ill. In the last century, we witnessed two world wars, which destroyed millions of lives and made their way in history books. Some individuals cared more about themselves than helping each other, they were only thinking about taking more power. Even today, discrimination is present in our society as it was sixty years ago, wars still exist and countries are controlled by governments that forget about humanity. All the nations across the globe should work together for the freedom and fulfillment of the world's population. ‘’We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other’s misery.’’ Our society is more determined than ever to promote humanity. The creation of various humanitarian organizations encourages everyone to work together to change the world. Our planet earth is our home, and we are all his occupants. A home is supposed to make you feel warm and safe, otherwise, it is simply a house with no life. SWOOSH, SWOOSH - The sound of the waves crashing on the shore woke her up. Opening her eyes, Polly saw the rays of the rising sun fill her bedroom. The silk sheets she had bought at the flea market allowed her to relax in the arms of Morpheus. As she removed the sheets, she leaned over the side and put her feet on the floor. The morning breeze coming through the window cooled the floor. As she was looking through her bay window, she saw the magnificent view of the ocean and a beautiful day on the horizon. She stood up, trying not to put too much pressure on her hips, and put on her yellow fluffy slippers. Covering herself with her dressing gown, she headed for the kitchen.
The rubbing of her slippers on the floor was the only thing we could hear in the house. Entering the kitchen, she turned on the coffee machine as well as the radio. Polly loved this radio show as they were playing the best songs of the '80s. Enjoying her coffee, she glanced out the window and saw the chief’s truck pass her house. “He’s out early,” said Polly. While humming and dancing, she went to her room to get dressed. She had been waiting for this moment. Polly had bought a new purple set of clothes and could not wait to wear it. She put it on and went to the bathroom. She spread her anti-wrinkle day cream all over her face and put in her dentures. Polly was all ready and took the door to get to her car. Leaving her driveway, she took off towards the village. Polly had a fairly complex morning routine. Every day, before going to work, she always stopped at the hairdresser to get her hair fixed to put more volume. Polly took two minutes to get to the convenience store next door to get her newspaper, especially for the crosswords. Supported by her little purple shoes, she walked on the edge of the street and greeted the merchants who were greeting her in return. Passing by the bicycle merchant, she saw children damaging the fence and the owner trying to get them away. The owner asked her to tell the chief so that he could take care of the situation. Polly loved to work for the chief because it allowed her to pass the time even though she had no idea what she was supposed to do. Like any other day, she stopped to wipe her shoes off the doormat before entering, took the side door and went directly to the chief’s office. |
